Jade: The Quarterlife Crisis

Spotify, 2022

Meet Jade, born and raised in the cosmopolitan metropolis of Singapore (not in China).

As she approaches her 30s, her world begins to stop making sense. Every step that she thought was the way forward has only left her stagnant.

Jade feels too undeserving of a holiday but too stifled to stay home, so she chooses the middle ground and goes on a trip of self-discovery, back to the birthplace of her ancestors in Beijing, China. As she returns to the beginning, she hopes this journey will be the answer to her problems.

Follow Jade in this 5-episode audio drama series as she attempts to figure out what it means to be her. She tries to find a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar land, surrounded by 2 billion people who might be her mother’s distant-second-uncle-once-removed cousin-in-law's great-grandchild’s neighbour. On the way, she reflects on her upbringing, values inculcated by her family and the cultural displacement she navigates through everyday life.

"'Jade' offers a unique perspective on the inner search for belonging in one's cultural heritage. Thoughtful, reflective and incredibly compelling as it is funny."
— Audience review

This audio drama series held a successful crowdfunding campaign in July 2022.

The campaign became a #ProjectWeLove on Kickstarter, and made it to the front page of the platform's arts section! Storytelling is a communal act, and crowdfunding is a communal approach to getting stories made. Given this project’s scale, topic and medium, traditional modes of funding aren’t readily available to support such works… but the community believed that professionals should be remunerated for their skills and labour (of love!) A big thank you to everyone who contributed.

We would especially like to thank the following backers for making this audio drama series possible:
